Reaching For Autumn
10″ x 40″
– Won Third Place in the Creative category in the annual Peddler’s Village Quilt Competition, January, 2003.
Machine pieced & free-motion quilted, fused applique, monofilament and metallic threads.
This art quilt began with a desire for fall to come quickly, as we were in the middle of yet another hot summer with a drought in Pennsylvania. I started only with the idea of creating a narrow wall hanging with two-tone leaves – maple, oak and beech. From there it grew to include the random rectilinear backgrounds, adding the tree branches toward the end, which added a necessary and unusual dimensional touch. This piece is partially pieced right sides together with some fusible applique. Autumn colors amaze me! And so do trees. The world needs more tree quilts.
